Restoring & Improving Quality Of Life With Dental Implants

Dental Implants

Dental implants are small threaded posts that essentially replace the missing tooth. Now-a-days, dental implants are shaped like a little cylinder.  However, there are different shapes & designs of dental implants used over the last 50 years.  Dental implants are made purely of Titanium, a very safe and biocompatible material. Dental implants also come in smaller diameters. These are referred to as "mini-implants".

Once a tooth is lost, the bone around the tooth starts being destroyed almost immediately. It is resorbed (which means it shrinks away) over time.  This process happens fairly quickly. In as little as 6 months, over 50% of the surrounding bone gets resorbed.

This bone loss slows down as time goes on, but it continues indefinitely. Buy why does this process happen?
The expression of "use it or lose it" applies here very well. You see, when the tooth is lost the surrounding bone no longer has a job to perform. There is no more use for that bone. Therefore, it shrinks away over time, thus the expression.

A perfect example is an old tree that dies. Once the roots of the tree are dead, the soil around the roots no longer has anything holding it there. Therefore, it all goes away (either blown away or washed away).

Dental implants, in place of the missing tooth allow for the bone to once again have a use. This prevents the surrounding bone from being destroyed or wasted away.  Going back to the "tree" example from above, it is similar to planting a new tree in place of the old tree.  The roots of the new tree keep the soil from being lost.
